US President Donald Trump’s approval rating for his first 100 days is the lowest for a newly elected president in 70 years, a CNN poll shows.

Trump’s 41 percent approval rating for his work so far is as low as that of Dwight Eisenhower and Donald Trump’s own first term.

In another poll conducted by the Pew Research Center, 59 percent of respondents disapprove of Trump’s job as president while 40 percent approve. The anti-Trump sentiment is mainly due to the president’s tariff policy (59 percent disapprove, 39 percent approve).

Similarly, in regards to the question of cuts to federal agencies and departments, 55 percent of respondents disapprove and 44 percent approve.

The Pew Research Center poll also shows that 62 percent of women and 55 percent of men disapprove of Trump’s job as president. A slight majority of white voters, 51 percent, approve of Trump’s work, while 82 percent of Black respondents, 72 percent of Hispanic respondents, and 69 percent of Asian respondents disapprove.

Furthermore, 55 percent of voters with a high school education or less now give Trump failing marks. However, Republican respondents appear somewhat confident that President Trump can manage the major issues the country is facing.

In regards to the economy – where Trump believes that he will steer the economy to the right path – public trust is low. In a poll released by Reuters, Trump’s overall approval rating is lower than the 42 percent he received right after his inauguration in January. Only  37 percent of respondents approve of Trump’s handling of the economy now.

What sounds worse for the president is that in the Reuters poll 75 percent of respondents are worried that a recession is coming.

Concerns Go Beyond the Economy

The Americans who responded to the CNN poll are not displeased about the economy only. Following his efforts to reshape the federal government’s workforce, Donald Trump has lost ground on approval ratings for managing the federal government, as 42 percent approve (down 6 points since March) and 46 percent express confidence in him to appoint the best people to office, down 8 points since December.

Only 43 percent see Trump’s actions as a necessary shake-up in Washington, while 57 percent say his approach to the presidency is unnecessarily putting the country at risk.

In regards to foreign affairs, including Trump’s more friendly attitude toward Russia in its war with Ukraine and slashing several foreign aid programs – are also disapproved by the majority (60 percent, as opposed to 39 percent of those who approve).

Even on the immigration issue, where the president had outperformed his first-term high by 7 points earlier this year, the poll finds declining approval ratings and diminished confidence in Trump’s actions. Overall, 45 percent approve in the new poll but the percentage is down by 6 points since March. Also 53 percent express confidence in his ability to deal with immigration problems, down from 60 percent in December.
