Nicolas Niarchos, a journalist and heir to one of Greece’s dominant shipping dynasties, and Malù dalla Piccola, an up-and-coming visual artist who marries Italian aristocracy with Russian artistic sensibilities, were wed in a civil ceremony in Switzerland.

The quiet event took place ahead of their much larger religious wedding, which will attract all the international jet set in a few weeks on Spetsopoula, one of the Saronic islands in Greece.

Nicolas Niarchos is a journalist whose work focuses on conflicts, minerals, and migration. A former Nation intern, his work has been published in The New Yorker, The Guardian, and The Independent. He is currently working on a book about cobalt mining.

He is the grandson of shipping tycoon Stavros Niarchos and son of Daphne Guinness. His grandfather was a self-made businessman of immense wealth who possessed an exceptional ability to make money.

Aristotle Onassis and Niarchos were the founders of the entire post-war Greek shipping industry that has put Greece into its prominent position on the world map of the industry.

Niarchos was also known for his adventurous love life, as he married five times, with two sisters being among his five brides.

After his death, his legacy continued with the Stavros Niarchos Foundation that has become a leader in philanthropic donations in the areas of arts and culture, education, health and medicine, and social welfare.

Nicolas and Malù exchanged vows at a small family gathering in Surselva, a beautiful and green area located in the Swiss Alps. 35-year-old investigative journalist and photographer Nicolas Niarchos and his wife, Malù, looked effortlessly chic. Malù wore a classic bridal outfit – a cream lace jacket worn with a midi skirt which was a contemporary take on sophisticated elegance.

The couple posted on social media a photo with their dog, which conveyed warmth, understated luxury, and a modern approach to being aristocratic and simple.

The civil ceremony might have marked their wedding, but the real focus of the couple’s wedding journey is set for Saturday, June 28, on the private island of Spetsopoula. Spetsopoula was a long-standing Niarchos family retreat and was once owned by the groom’s grandfather, the shipping magnate Stavros Niarchos.

The religious wedding will be held at Saint Spyridon, a small chapel above Spetsopoula, and the private reception will be limited to 100 select guests, arriving by yacht from Spetses.

His wife, Malù dalla Piccola who descends from Italian nobility, grew up between Russia and Europe, and now works as a visual artist and designer based in New York, with a presence in global art circles.
