What was once a staple of low-cost, convenient dining is steadily becoming less accessible, with ongoing price increases putting pressure on both consumers and businesses alike.
The days when a souvlaki wrap cost around 2.50 euros (almost 3 euros) are now firmly in the past. Continuous price hikes have transformed one of Greece’s most popular street foods into a noticeably more expensive choice.
Industry professionals warn that additional increases may be on the horizon, as businesses struggle to manage rising costs without passing them on to customers.
The surge in prices is largely driven by higher costs for raw materials and operations. Meat, cooking oils, and vegetables have all seen significant price increases, while energy and other operating expenses continue to climb.
Grill house owners and suppliers say they are trying to absorb part of the burden, but maintaining stable prices is becoming increasingly difficult.
In Athens, many souvlaki shops now charge more than five euros per wrap. In popular tourist destinations such as Santorini, prices can reach seven euros.
