A newly released survey reveals that the expat community in Greece is far more concentrated—and far more legally complicated—than most outsiders realize.

As the survey by Expats Greece finds, for these individuals, moving to Greece wasn’t as simple as packing a bag. It required surviving an immigration gauntlet of consulate appointments, certified translations, and endless paperwork. It represents a profound cultural and financial commitment to the country.

While retirees make up the slim majority at 54%, one in five expats in Greece is an entrepreneur or business owner. These are people building remote consulting practices, localized hospitality projects, or corporate second acts. Together with local employees (8%) and digital nomads (3%), nearly a third of the community is actively engaged in economic life.

One in five of Greece’s expats lives on Crete

Where they choose to live drastically alters their reality. Island life captures 41% of expats (with Crete leading at 20%), offering idyllic environments that face stark infrastructure drops in the winter. Meanwhile, 30% anchor themselves in Athens for proximity to airports, hospitals, and corporate networks, while 29% choose the mainland, dominated by the Peloponnese (18%).

The survey highlights a fascinating psychological shift that happens upon arrival. Prior to moving, expats stress about logistics—namely visas and healthcare. But once the container is unpacked, the anxiety becomes social.

The top three struggles on the ground are visas/bureaucracy (35%), the language barrier (34%), and finding community (31%). Successful integration requires moving past the paperwork and actively building a support system to combat isolation.
