An extraordinary incident unfolded recently in southern Peloponnese when a man was spotted swimming directly toward a ferry attempting (and succeeding) to climb aboard mid-voyage.
The incident occurred at Elafonisos port. Reports say that the ferry, operating the Elafonisos–Pounta (Laconia) route, encountered severe difficulties while attempting to approach the harbor, forcing it into repeated maneuvers. Throughout these attempts, the ship’s ramp remained fully lowered, significantly heightening the concern of onlookers on the shore.
Simultaneously, a man already in the water was spotted swimming towards the ferry. It was later revealed that the individual is reportedly one of the ship’s co-owners, who was allegedly attempting to assist with the problematic docking procedure.
According to competent authorities, officers from the Port Authority and the Local Vessel Inspection Team rushed to the scene. Their investigation revealed that the ferry had suffered a mechanical failure in its starboard main engine.
While the crew managed to perform a temporary repair allowing the vessel to dock safely, the port authority took immediate action. No injuries or signs of marine pollution were reported. However, the Port Authority has banned the vessel from departing until a certificate of seaworthiness is issued by a recognized classification society. Administrative sanction procedures have also been initiated.
Elafonisos is a tiny, exotic island located just off the southeastern tip of the Peloponnese peninsula in southern Greece. It sits in the Laconian Gulf, separated from the mainland village of Pounta by a very narrow strait—only about 570 meters wide.
It is world-famous for its crystal-clear, turquoise waters and vast white-sand beaches, most notably Simos Beach, which is frequently ranked among the most beautiful beaches in the Mediterranean.
