Chios is battling a relentless fire that continues to rage on three active fronts, pushing firefighters to their limits in an all-night struggle.

The inferno has already forced the evacuation of 16 settlements, leaving a trail of destruction across olive groves, greenhouses, homes, and vital infrastructure.

Strong, stormy winds are severely hindering firefighting efforts, allowing the flames to threaten residential areas. A substantial force of 100 firefighters is currently deployed on the island, bolstered by specialized units, 23 vehicles, 2 aircraft, and 11 helicopters, including a coordination helicopter.

Reinforcements are steadily arriving, with additional firefighters and equipment en route from Piraeus and Thessaloniki.

The Municipality of Chios has issued an urgent appeal for donations of water, food, and medical supplies to support the tireless volunteers and firefighters. Local accommodation facilities are also being made available for those displaced.

Chios fire raises suspicions of arson

The origin of this massive blaze, which ignited with three simultaneous outbreaks within a mere 90 minutes on Sunday, has raised strong suspicions of arson. Greek authorities have launched a full-scale investigation in collaboration with the Hellenic Police.

Minister of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, Yiannis Kefalogiannis, has condemned these potentially deliberate acts, warning of “heavy criminal and administrative sanctions” for anyone responsible.

“No one can put lives and property at risk with impunity,” he stated, expressing deep concern over the recent surge in simultaneous fires across Greece amidst a high-risk fire season.

“In the last 48 hours, we had 110 fires, most of which did not spread thanks to the immediate mobilization of firefighting forces. However, fires such as those in Chios, where with a risk index of 4, three parallel different outbreaks broke out, are causing concern and raising suspicions,” the Greek minister noted.

Is Greece prepared for the wildfire season?

The fire on Chios is the most serious of 2025 in Greece so far.

Wildfires have been devastating Greece in recent years. In 2021, more than 500 square miles (1,300 square kilometers) were destroyed. In 2023, damage from wildfires surged to 675 square miles (1,745 square kilometers)—roughly three times the 2011-2020 average, according to data from the European Union’s Forest Fire Information System.

In 2023, one of Europe’s largest wildfires on record also burned for weeks in northern Greece, killing at least twenty people.

Last month, Greece conducted a massive exercise to test the country’s evolving wildfire response, which increasingly relies on more firefighters and advanced technologies such as drone surveillance.
