The parents of two boys in Greece, Spyros and Sini, who tragically drowned in the icy waters of the Arachthos River near Arta, have made the courageous decision to donate their children’s organs. This extraordinary gift will bring light and life to 13 individuals, a testament to an unimaginable act of generosity amidst profound loss.

Tragedy Strikes in the Arachthos River

The devastating incident unfolded when a group of four teenagers went swimming in the river near the village of Neochori, Arta. 12-year-old Sini, reportedly not a strong swimmer, was swiftly swept away by the powerful current. Spyros, his 14-year-old friend, bravely attempted a rescue but also quickly found himself in distress.

Hearing the desperate cries for help from the remaining children, local residents and employees from a nearby riverside café rushed to the scene.

Levian Goga, the courageous man who dived into the river to retrieve the boys, described the immense difficulty in finding the second child. “I went to find him. I dived and didn’t find him. Then I jumped from the boat… it was very deep, five or six meters. I saw the child lying there, I grabbed him, and I barely managed to bring him to the surface so he could breathe.”

Both boys were transported in critical condition to the pediatric intensive care unit of Patra University Hospital, but tragically, despite all efforts, they both passed away.

13 lives transformed by boys’ organ donation

Andreas Eliades, the Director of the Children’s ICU at the University Hospital of Patras, spoke of the parents’ “act of greatness of soul,” confirming that a total of 13 organs were donated for transplantation, offering a new chance at life to multiple recipients across Greece and beyond.

The 14-year-old, Spyros, gave the gift of:

Liver: Transplanted to an adult at Laiko Hospital.
Kidneys: One transplanted to a recipient also at Laiko Hospital, the other sent to Thessaloniki.
Corneas: One was transferred to a tissue bank for future transplantation, while the second was urgently sent to AHEPA Hospital in Thessaloniki for a 14-year-old teenager suffering from a serious injury.

The 12-year-old, Sini, also became a profound source of hope:

Lungs: Being transferred to recipients in Hanover, Germany.
Heart: Destined for a recipient in Bari, Italy.
Liver: Transplanted to a 20-year-old recipient at Hippocratic Hospital in Thessaloniki.
Kidney and Pancreas: Transplanted to a 47-year-old patient suffering from diabetes and kidney failure in Rio, Patras.
Second Kidney: Likely destined for a minor kidney patient at Laiko Hospital.
Corneas: Transferred to a tissue bank, with recipients to be determined in the coming days.

This incredible act of generosity in the face of unimaginable sorrow underscores the profound impact organ donation can have, turning tragedy into a legacy of hope and life for many.
