A wedding in Greece is far more than a simple ceremony; it can be a luxury event that can easily exceed €157,000 ($182,000). With an average of 130 guests traveling and staying for four nights, destination weddings fuel an extensive chain of tourism services. Consequently, destination wedding tourism has emerged as one of the most dynamic and lucrative sectors of the Greek economy, characterized by a strong international footprint and significant growth potential.
These findings were revealed in a study by Focus Bari titled “Saying Yes to Greece – Destination Weddings in Greece: Market Snapshot,” which was presented recently at the Destination Weddings Tourism Forum – Greece 2026. According to the research, the average budget per wedding reaches €160,000 (excluding VAT), while the sector’s total annual economic contribution to the country could reach up to €2.5 billion ($2.9 billion).
The market is overwhelmingly international, with 77% of weddings managed by professional planners involving couples from abroad.
The dominant source markets are the US, the UK, Australia, Canada, and Israel, while new markets such as India and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) are growing rapidly. In terms of demand, 95% of industry professionals report inquiries from the US, followed by the UK (58%), Australia (27%), Canada (24%), Israel (18%), and the UAE (16%).
The survey also highlights key preferences among couples: 95% seek authentic local experiences and personalized planning, 92% prioritize privacy, and 84% emphasize high-end gastronomy. Furthermore, 34% are turning toward eco-friendly practices, reflecting a broader shift toward sustainable event planning.
At the same time, trends such as multi-day celebrations, pre- and post-wedding activities, and immersive destination experiences are gaining traction. A prime example of this momentum is the Indian market, where a three-day wedding hosting 300 guests can easily command a budget of up to €1 million.
