Greece’s Myrtos Beach in Kefalonia was ranked among Europe’s most beautiful and peaceful coastal destinations this April by Wizz Air, the low-cost carrier group headquartered in Budapest, Hungary.
Wizz Air’s ranking assessed over 50 beaches across Europe, evaluating each one based on spatial comfort, average temperatures, and overall weather conditions. Myrtos earned a solid score of 30.7 out of 50, landing it in the top ten. The beach’s pristine beauty, combined with low crowd levels this season, helped it secure a spot among more widely known hotspots like Nissi Beach in Cyprus and Ibiza’s Playa d’en Bossa.
Tucked away between towering limestone cliffs, Myrtos Beach is a dazzling jewel on the island of Kefalonia. With its striking white pebbles and mesmerizing turquoise waters, this secluded paradise has captivated travelers for decades.
According to legends, Myrtos Beach was once a secret haven for sailors seeking refuge from the unpredictable Ionian winds. Its crescent-shaped bay, shielded by rugged cliffs, has long provided a natural sanctuary. Today, the same dramatic landscape makes Myrtos one of the most photographed beaches in Greece, yet it remains wonderfully unspoiled.
Over the years, Myrtos has garnered multiple awards for its natural beauty. Most recently, it was named one of the “Best of the Best Beaches” in the TripAdvisor Travellers’ Choice Awards, thanks to thousands of glowing reviews. Visitors frequently describe it as “picture-perfect” and “magical,” highlighting its slightly remote but rewarding location.
While Myrtos feels blissfully secluded, it isn’t without convenience. You can rent a sunbed, enjoy a refreshing drink at the beach bar, or visit one of the 18 nearby restaurants within a short drive. Adventurous travelers can also join local boat tours to explore hidden sea caves, sample Kefalonia’s traditional cuisine, and sip on regional wines.
Access to the beach involves navigating a winding, steep road that offers panoramic views of the coastline—especially stunning at sunset. Arriving early is recommended to enjoy calmer waters and better chances at securing parking. Facilities like changing rooms and restrooms are also available to make your beach day more comfortable.
Unlike the bustling beaches of Santorini or Mykonos, Myrtos is a retreat for those who seek serenity. There are no towering resorts, no overwhelming crowds—just the rhythmic sound of waves and the scent of salt in the air. Visitors often find themselves lingering, mesmerized by the harmony of nature.
Kefalonia, the largest of the Ionian islands, with its emerald-colored mountains, secluded coves and underground lakes, has recently been crowned the best Greek island by Which? magazine.
Abundant sandy beaches, scenery uninterrupted by high-rise buildings and access to much-sought-after solitude sealed the deal for the island, off the west coast of mainland Greece, in the consumer body’s annual survey.
Which? asked more than 1,000 visitors to rate the 10 main Greek islands on factors including beaches, attractions, scenery and value for money.
Kefalonia, the setting for Louis de Bernières’ novel Captain Corelli’s Mandolin and a major location for the 2001 film starring Nicolas Cage and Penélope Cruz, was the only island to score five stars in the peace and quiet category, gaining an overall 85 percent.
