Israel launched a new wave of airstrikes against Iran on Monday, with key sites targeted across the country, including a crucial nuclear facility and a notorious prison.

These actions come as tensions between the two nations continue to escalate, with both sides reporting reciprocal attacks.

Key targets struck by Israel in Iran

The office of Israel’s defense minister said Monday that the military was “attacking with unprecedented force regime targets and government repression entities in the heart of Iran.” It was the first time Israel has acknowledged striking targets linked to the Iranian regime’s domestic authority, rather than its military or nuclear assets.

Fordo Nuclear Facility: Israel claims to have struck the underground Fordo nuclear facility, a site central to Iran’s nuclear program. The Israeli military stated its objective was to “obstruct access routes” to the facility. This strike follows a reported targeting of Fordo by the US over the weekend.

Evin Prison: In Tehran, the capital, parts of the infamous Evin Prison have sustained damage from “projectiles,” according to the Iranian judiciary. Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz asserted that the prison houses the Iranian regime’s “enemies.”

Basij Headquarters and symbolic clock: Minister Katz also reported strikes on the headquarters of the Basij, a militia frequently employed by the Iranian government to quell protests.

Additionally, a symbolic clock in Tehran, which counts down to a predicted date of Israel’s destruction, was targeted. Residents in Tehran have reported power cuts following the strikes.

Iran retaliates

Iran has responded with its own airstrikes on Israel sending people to bomb shelters across the country. While Israeli authorities have reported no casualties, approximately 8,000 people in southern Israel are currently without power. Dozens of missiles were reportedly launched at Israel, with impacts in at least two sites in the northern port city of Haifa and on a road in the southern city of Ashdod.

Iranian missiles appear to have struck an area near a power station in the city of Ashdod, causing a large explosion.

The rhetoric surrounding these events remains highly charged. Israel has declared it is striking Iran with “unprecedented force.”

Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump on Sunday publicly entertained the notion of regime change in Iran, posting on social media, “If the current Iranian Regime is unable to MAKE IRAN GREAT AGAIN, why wouldn’t there be a Regime change?”

He also said that Iran’s highly fortified Fordo nuclear enrichment site, along with the Isfahan and Natanz nuclear facilities, had been “completely and totally obliterated” by the U.S. strikes.

“Initial battle damage assessments indicate that all three sites sustained extremely severe damage and destruction,” the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Gen. Dan Caine, said during a news conference, noting that a full assessment of the damage would take time.
