The Greek island of Lipsi in the Dodecanese archipelago is capturing international attention in 2025 as one of the most unique and environmentally conscious holiday destinations in Europe.

In February 2025, Lipsi was declared the second most exotic and authentic destination in the world by the influential Far Away Travel Blog. “It is a relatively unknown destination and offers you a quiet, authentic Greek atmosphere away from mass tourism,” the blog notes. “The island radiates with Greek, charming charm and enchants with its naturalness. Lipsi is ideal for slowing down. It is a little pearl—an undiscovered picture-book island.”

The main town of Lipsi, with its traditional whitewashed houses and cobbled streets, offers a quintessential Greek island vibe. Its small port, lined with tavernas, cafés, and quaint shops, is a perfect reflection of island life.

“Lipsi offers you a picturesque, quiet atmosphere. It’s a perfect destination for a relaxed, authentic Greek island experience—far from the hustle and bustle of Mykonos or Santorini, without losing any of their beauty,” adds Far Away Travel Blog.

British newspaper The Mirror echoed the sentiment, calling Lipsi “the ideal choice for those looking for a destination beyond the ordinary,” praising its pristine beaches, turquoise waters, and warm hospitality far from tourist crowds.

Lipsi launched environmental initiatives

Local authorities, in close collaboration with the island’s residents, have launched bold environmental initiatives aimed at preserving the natural landscape, ensuring water sustainability, and maintaining the island’s authentic character for future generations.

French publication Le Figaro also included Lipsi among its standout travel picks for 2025, citing its unspoiled coastline, quality services, and the rejuvenating atmosphere enjoyed by families, couples, and solo travelers alike.

A major part of Lipsi’s allure is its strong stance on sustainability. In 2023, the island banned the construction of swimming pools to conserve water and launched a broader campaign for sustainable tourism. “Our concept of holidays does not belong to the past, but to the future,” says Mayor Fotis Maggos. “Mediterranean islands will soon be forced to follow our example to protect the environment and address the growing challenges of heatwaves and water scarcity.”

This vision is captured in a promotional video that follows a young couple enjoying its natural beaches, warm hospitality, and unique charm without pools or rows of sunbeds.

A model for future tourism

Lipsi’s commitment to sustainability has resonated deeply with travelers, both in Greece and abroad. In recent years, the island has seen consecutive record-breaking ferry arrivals and tourist satisfaction rates exceeding 90 percent, based on a comprehensive survey of thousands of online reviews conducted by the Municipality of Lipsi.

To support this growing interest and ensure long-term sustainability, the municipality has invested in a €1.7 million project—funded by the Antonis Tritsis program—to modernize the water supply infrastructure. This includes a remote-control system for water management, chlorine monitoring across the island’s reservoirs, and the installation of 800 digital water meters.

A recent 13 km expansion of the water supply network has further improved efficiency. These efforts have already led to a significant double-digit reduction in water consumption and waste.

Mayor Maggos concludes: “By prioritizing sustainability and authenticity, Lipsi is not only protecting its natural beauty but also offering a model for future tourism—where less is more, and nature takes center stage.”
