The clothes and phone of missing Long Island Democrat Petros Krommidas have been found on a beach close to his car, his family said, as they revealed he likely swam in the sea while training for an upcoming triathlon.

Krommidas, who is running for a seat in the Nassau County Legislature, hasn’t been seen since he set off for a training swim last Wednesday night at Long Beach, according to police and his family.

The 29-year-old’s locked car was later found parked by the Allegria Hotel, just off the beach he regularly goes to, his family said in a social media post.

“He locked his car, took a towel, and around 10:30 p.m. walked onto the beach to exercise, just as he had done many times before,” they wrote.

“He has always been in great shape and was training for a triathlon. He was not a stranger to cold water training,” the post stated.

His family reported him missing the following day, noting it was “completely out of character for him not to respond.”

“The police found his towel, clothes, and phone left on the beach. Since then, search efforts have been ongoing, but we need the public’s help,” the family said in the post.

“Specifically, we need people to walk the beaches, focused between Lido Beach to Riis Park — particularly during times of high tide.”

Krommidas was an active Democrat

Just two days before he vanished, Krommidas — a former student-athlete at Columbia University — had addressed the Nassau County Young Democrats’ monthly meeting ahead of his election primary on June 24.

The Long Island native had worked in finance, including at Morgan Stanley and Sageview Capital, before throwing his hat in the political ring in 2024 with a job as a Democratic Party field organizer.

“We are heartbroken over the disappearance of Petros Krommidas,” Nassau County Democratic Committee chairman Jay Jacobs said in a statement.

“Petros is a bright, driven young man who has been a strong voice for Democratic values. He is well respected by the community and represents the very best of our next generation of leaders. We are keeping Petros and his family in our prayers and remain hopeful for his safe return.”

Police said Krommidas was last seen wearing a camouflage shirt and gray sweats. He is described as a male white, 6 feet 2 inches tall, 230 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes.

He vanished during a period of heightened social engagement, actively participating in protests and rallies. Remarkably, just two days before he was last seen, Krommidas shared photos from a Long Island protest opposing Donald Trump’s policies, where he was pictured holding a placard.
