An incident in Heraklion, Greece, has caused widespread shock, where a woman abandoned and allegedly disposed of her newborn baby in a trash can shortly after giving birth.

According to reports from Creta24.gr, the newborn was discovered inside bags in a trash can in Nea Alikarnassos, near the Industrial District. The 33-year-old mother has been arrested on charges of attempted infanticide.

Fortunately, the newborn was found conscious and in good health and was promptly transferred to PAGNI hospital. Stelios Kteniadakis, the deputy head of the hospital, confirmed the baby’s condition. The mother, under guard, is also receiving medical treatment.

The incident came to light when the woman’s husband found her bleeding at home and called emergency services. Upon arriving, rescuers discovered the woman had recently given birth but could not locate the baby. It was only after a thorough search that they found the child in the trash bin.

The husband, unable to have children due to medical reasons, claimed he was unaware of his wife’s pregnancy. Authorities are conducting a thorough investigation into the matter and assessing the family’s circumstances to ensure the best outcome for the infant.”

The authorities are continuing the preliminary investigation into the incident, while their family situation is also being investigated in order to find the best solution for the infant.

Deceased fetus discovered in Thessaloniki

Last week, a deceased fetus was discovered behind a canteen in the Oreokastro area of Thessaloniki.

The fetus was approximately four months old at the time of a miscarriage. Traces of placenta were identified next to the body, supporting the theory that the mother suffered a spontaneous miscarriage at the location.

A day later the woman was identified as a 30-year-old of Albanian descent. She told police that she was at a wedding party near the canteen when she felt unwell.

She then left the center and, as she reported, went behind the canteen where she noticed that she was bleeding. The woman said that, due to the low lighting conditions, she did not realize that she had miscarried. She was released on bail.

Prior to the Heraklion case, another newborn was found abandoned in Greece

A few days earlier, an infant girl was discovered abandoned beside a recycling dumpster in the seaside suburb of Alimos, south of Athens.

The 43-year-old grandmother, who was responsible for the child at the time of the abduction, has been arrested.

The incident began in downtown Omonia, about 10 kilometers (6 miles) from where the baby was found.

Camera footage showed her grandmother, a Roma woman, begging outside a supermarket with the infant. At one point, the perpetrator approaches her and appears to say, “Let’s go inside so I can do some shopping for you.”

They then go inside, and, while they are in the diaper aisle, the perpetrator snatches the girl and disappears.

Roughly two hours later, passersby in Alimos heard a baby crying and discovered the infant between dumpsters. Police were called to the scene, and the baby was taken to the hospital, where doctors confirmed she was unharmed.
