Greece’s Port Authority has announced a ban on sea sports during peak afternoon hours on beaches in residential areas along the Athens Riviera, effective from June 1 through September 30, 2025.

As part of efforts to enhance public safety and minimize disturbances for residents and beachgoers, the use of jet skis, sea bikes, surf-jets, and similar watercraft will be prohibited daily from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

The restriction applies to both privately owned and rented recreational vessels and includes all similar sea sports equipment (e.g., sea kayaks, surf-skis). The measure targets densely populated coastal zones, where complaints of noise, overcrowding, and safety risks have grown during the busy summer season.

Zones on the Athens Riviera with sea sports restrictions

  • Municipality of Palaio Faliro: From Cine Flisvos to Vathi Street
  • Municipality of Elliniko–Argyroupoli: From Alpha Street to Evryalis Street
  • Municipality of Glyfada: From Evryalis Street to Grigoriou Lambraki Street, then to Prigkipos Petrou Street
  • Municipality of Vari–Voula–Vouliagmeni: From Prince Petrou Street to Kronou and Sfakia Streets
  • Municipality of Kropia: From Agia Marina Avenue to Apiranthou Street
  • Municipality of Saronikos (Saronida): From Apiranthos Street to the 44th kilometer of Athens–Sounio Avenue

Violators of the restriction may face fines and legal consequences, as outlined by the Port Authority. Authorities are calling on beach visitors and watercraft operators to respect the designated hours and adhere to the restricted areas to ensure a safer and more enjoyable beach environment for all.

This initiative reflects growing concerns over the impact of sea sports on coastal communities during the high season and aims to strike a balance between recreation and residential quality of life.

The allure of the Athens Riviera

The Athens Riviera is the scenic stretch of coastline that runs along the southern suburbs of Athens, extending from Palaio Faliro near the city center all the way down to Cape Sounion, where the Temple of Poseidon overlooks the Aegean Sea.

The Riviera includes beautiful beaches, both organized (with sunbeds, cafes, beach bars) and more secluded spots, and luxury resorts & marinas. Areas like Vouliagmeni and Glyfada are known for upscale hotels, yacht marinas, and fine dining. Stylish restaurants, beach clubs, and cocktail bars line the coast.

The development of Ellinikon, one of the largest urban redevelopment projects in Europe, located on the site of the former Athens International Airport, is a major transformative project on the Athens Riviera and is set to redefine the entire coastal landscape of the region.

The ongoing development will become Europe’s largest coastal park, spanning over 2 million square meters—nearly double the size of London’s Hyde Park.

It will include luxury residences & hotels, a marina & beachfront development, commercial & business hubs, retail spaces, and entertainment centers.
