Greece faces a total transport standstill this Friday as a 24-hour nationwide strike marks International Workers’ Day. Trade unions across the maritime, rail, and urban transit sectors are mobilizing to demand higher wages, bolstered labor rights, and rigorous safety standards.

The scope of disruption on May Day

The strike, spearheaded by the Panhellenic Seamen’s Federation (PNO), runs from midnight to midnight, paralyzing passenger and freight movement nationwide.

Maritime: All vessel categories—from island ferries to international shipping—will remain docked.

Rail: National and suburban rail services (Proastiakos) are completely suspended.

Urban Transit: Athens Metro lines 1, 2, 3, and the Tram will not operate. Buses and trolleybuses will run only from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., while the Attica Transport Consortium buses are expected to maintain normal service.

Core Demands: More Than Just Wages

Beyond inflation-adjusted pay raises, unions are focusing on structural reforms:

Safety First: In the wake of recent infrastructure concerns, rail and maritime workers are prioritizing safety protocols and the modernization of damaged networks.

Rights & Education: PNO is fighting for the “public and free” character of maritime education and the protection of collective bargaining agreements.

Cost of Living: Port employees and dockworkers are demanding government intervention against rising housing costs and “profiteering,” alongside calls for a fairer tax system.

In his May Day address, PNO Secretary General Manolis Tsikalakis invoked the spirit of the 1886 Chicago Haymarket riots, reminding workers that the eight-hour workday was won through unity, not granted by default.

In Greece, May Day has deep political roots. It commemorates the 1936 Thessaloniki tobacco workers’ strike, where dozens of protesters were killed by police. It is also a day to remember the 200 Greek resistance fighters executed by the Nazi occupying forces in Kairariani, Athens.
