An official prosecutor’s investigation has been launched in Greece following a highly publicized physical and verbal altercation between billionaire shipping magnate Evangelos Marinakis and powerful political figure Grigoris Dimitriadis.
The confrontation occurred on Sunday at the Telekom Center Athens, shortly before the tipoff of the 2026 EuroLeague Final Four championship game between Olympiacos and Real Madrid. Footage circulating on social media showed the 58-year-old Marinakis with a torn shirt, engaging in a heated argument in the stands while security personnel and a barrier separated the two men.

Aristidis Koreas, head of the Athens First Instance Prosecutor’s Office, has ordered the Department for Tackling Sports Venue Violence to investigate the matter. Authorities are currently reviewing video footage to determine if the clash violates strict sports-related criminal laws, which carry severe penalties under the Greek government’s current crackdown on stadium violence.

The incident has drawn intense public scrutiny due to the high profile of both men. Marinakis is a prominent sports executive who owns Olympiacos FC and the English Premier League club Nottingham Forest. His tenure in English football has been marked by recent controversy, including a prior five-game stadium ban for improper conduct toward match officials and a £750,000 fine levied against his club for criticizing VAR integrity.
Dimitriadis is the nephew of Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and previously served as his powerful chief of staff before resigning in 2022 amidst the high-profile phone spyware scandal.
