Tourists aboard a boat traveling north of Lefkada toward Paxoi were treated to a magnificent and exceedingly rare spectacle when five sperm whales emerged at the ocean surface, putting on an unforgettable show. Experts have noted that the distinct vocalizations heard in the footage are likely communication signals between the majestic marine mammals.

The Ionian Sea, where the island of Lefkada is situated, stands as one of the most vital habitats for sperm whales in the entire Mediterranean. According to WWF, the Hellenic Trench, with its vast underwater canyons and steep drop-offs, is the true home of the Mediterranean sperm whale, sheltering a population of roughly two hundred individuals.
This trench includes the deepest point in the Mediterranean (the Calypso Deep at 5,121 meters), providing the perfect environment for the whales’ deep-sea foraging dives, which can last up to ninety minutes. Crucially, the Hellenic Trench is one of the very few places in the Mediterranean where females give birth and raise their calves, and where social pods and solitary males coexist year-round.
Earlier in June, a whale about thirty feet long (9 meters) was spotted swimming in Theologos, located in the North Euboean Gulf in Greece. Locals out on boats looking for a quick getaway in the North Euboean Gulf immediately noticed the massive marine mammal. One group managed to film the encounter from a safe distance, capturing the sheer size of the whale.
