

Greek universities experienced a broad decline in the newly released QS World University Rankings 2027, despite three local institutions making their first-ever appearance in the global study.
The latest evaluation, which assesses over 1,500 universities across 106 nations, revealed that all seven previously ranked universities dropped in standings compared to the prior year. On a positive note, the country expanded its overall footprint to ten top-1,500 institutions with the debut of Democritus University of Thrace, the University of the Aegean, and the University of Thessaly, all entering in the 1,201–1,400 tier.
In the upper echelons, the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) managed to preserve its spot within the global top 400. However, the University of Athens slid out of the top 400 bracket, and Aristotle University of Thessaloniki dropped to 502nd place.
The data highlighted systemic issues in global integration, with Greek universities failing to crack the top 800 for international faculty staff and showing flatlined progress across international research collaborations.
